Bamboo Shelters in Pharping

HealthCare Nepal joined with Sagarmatha Health Foundation-Nepal to provide low-cost shelters to families whose homes in the village of Pharping were destroyed by the earthquakes. Local villagers were taught construction skills and, with supervision and assistance from engineering students from Kathmandu, built their own two-room, 9’x18' shelters. We provided bamboo, bricks, and corrugated roofing for the basic shelters at no cost, with some owners adding additional living space on their own. HCN's cost for materials and transportation was $400 per shelter, with each dwelling having a projected lifespan of 5-10 years — sufficient time for rebuilding a permanent home.
